MOMOIRO CLOVER Z / “GIG TAKAHASHI”@club FLEEZ in Takasaki in Gunma

On November 3, "GIG TAKAHASHI" was held at club FLEEZ in Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture.
"No way!? Are you serious!? We're so close to the audience!!" These were their first reactions as the band members entered Takasaki club FLEEZ on November 3, Culture Day. The 5 of them were thrilled to see how close the stage was to the audience - the way a live music club should be.
They immediately began rehearsing, but the 5 members were soon plagued by problems with the sound levels.
"Right now it sounds loud, but I wonder when the audience is here if they'll be able to hear us properly..." MOMOKA was worried. When 400 fans fill this space and begin cheering, what would be the appropriate mike levels? AYAKA offered an impossible suggestion. "How about all of us and everyone on staff yell 400 people's worth?" Junpei the PA seemed to have an inspired idea. "For situations like this... ta da da!(*like the sound effect that Doraemon makes when he brings out a secret device)" "Hey, it's Doraemon!!" squealed KANAKO - who had just the other day dressed up as Doraemon(for the HALLOWEEN PARTY 2016 thrown by VAMPS). "Deja vu!!" chimed in RENI. Everyone, including the staff, all awaited with bated breath in anticipation of what trump card Junpei would deliver. Junpei smiled devilishly and gave his answer. "... let's just have fun with this situation." At this, all of the band members burst out laughing, and then nodded in assent.
But nonetheless, everyone was in agreement that they wanted to deliver the best quality sound to their audience. "When the crowd cheers, maybe we should raise the levels on the orchestra and solos," said AYAKA. KANAKO proposed, "we should judge the situation properly and let Junpei know." And so Junpei would frantically deal with all of the rapid-fire requests that the members peppered him with. "'Rōdō Sanka' sounds like we're singing off the CD!" "The unison part is too fast!" "Hey, that sounds different than the last time..." And so on. But still, it was alot of fun. "Good, you're getting it now." And at the very end of the rehearsal... MOMOKA hopped excitedly and screamed with joy. "Junpei! OK!!" AYAKA seemed to put it best. "He's like our daddy who's being driven crazy by his 5 spoiled little daughters." At that, everyone laughed.
club FLEEZ - the famous live music club in Takasaki, is well known for its deep connection to the legendary rock band "BOOWY." This concert was put together by the famous concert producer Mr. H.I.P. Takahashi(aka "Master Takahashi"). Master Takahashi was renowned for the special concerts he threw on his birthday, such as the December 2015 edition of the monthly concert "Monthly TAKAHASHI Final Edition"(@ Green Dome Maebashi). That was an exhibition of the mysterious style of this Takahashi festival, with all audience members with the last name of Takahashi receiving special autographed baseball caps and the privilege to view the concert from Mr. Takahashi's exclusively cordoned off area.
Before the concert began, Master Takahashi climbed up on stage, introduced himself, and expressed his appreciation and gratitude for Momoiro Clover Z. "I am here today because of the experience I gained working with Momoclo. Momoclo are... magnificent!" The crowd showered him with warm applause. The sound system played an endless loop of BOOWY. The venue was packed to the gills. The GIG was ready! And now, all that was left, was to await the legendary 5...
The 5 appeared onstage to the strands of the overture, and it appeared that they couldn't wait to start this rare live performance... or rather, they couldn't wait to start the GIG. To our surprise, the first song was "Ikuze! Kaitō Shōjo". Have we ever seen the "shrimp jump" from so close before...? The 5 members and their audience were - perhaps from overwhelming joy and excitement, and a bit of bashfulness, all smiles. For "Tsuyoku Tsuyoku," they spun specially made TAKAHASHI towels. All 5 members kept edging forward to the brink of the stage. When they flung their towels upwards, they immediately slapped against the ceiling. When MOMTAMAI messed up a move during "DNA Rhapsody," they giggled, and we saw it from up close. So close. From their sharp dance moves, to their hard breaths, we could feel the air in the room tremble with their every move. At the end of "Link Link," it was MC time.
"Boys!" "Girls!" "Takahashi!" Even the cheers and responses were done Takahashi style!
MOMOKA: "How are you all doing? You guys okay?"
RENI: "You girls in the front, you doing alright?"
And here is where we get today's nice assist with the appearance of the springboard. MOMOKA is overjoyed. The rule of this springboard is that whenever the members decide that this is a "moment," they can jump on it.
KANAKO: "I'll need to work hard to make sure that AYAKA doesn't take it from me!"
AYAKA: "It's so exciting, I might get on even if it's someone else's turn!"
RENI brought things back like so: "Is the first time you've been in such a packed house? The first time in a while? Those bargain sales at New Years are like this, aren't they?" AYAKA laughed, "Is that what you're comparing this to(LOL)?" But RENI's description was probably accurate... we can barely move in here!
But from these packed conditions emerged a minor miracle. It happened when SHIORI introduced herself. "What? Huh?" SHIORI realized that something was wrong. In fact, the crowd was packed so tightly together that they couldn't even applaud.
So they decided, "let's say 'ton ton ton!' with our voices!" And MOMOKA realized it too. "Me too... let's say 'pachi pachi!' with your voices." And AYAKA responded with a splendid assist. "Okay then, why don't we split everyone up into 2 groups - the pachi pachi team and the ton ton team?" The end result was that... it was difficult. But the members had a big laugh about it.
During rehearsals there was no springboard. But without any prior meetings about it, they were able to time everything perfectly, in order, at times engaged in comical back and forths, and at times flirted with each other... and used the springboard to its full potential and beyond. During "Kasō Dystopia" they each took turns standing atop it. During "Monoclo Dessan" they would change their singing parts to accommodate the mike levels - another rare GIG version. During "Hakkin no Yoake" the cheers that had been heaving and undulating just moments before disappeared into hushed silence. This ballad, heard from such close proximity, spoke more than anything to how eloquently Momoclo had evolved.
RENI: "You're all so close, it makes me nervous. After all, I could just reach out and touch you. It feels like we're all performing together!!"
AYAKA: "This was fun! It's not often that we can perform with everyone so close to us. When I can see all of your faces so clearly, I can feel your emotions and passion. Hot! Isn't it hot in here? Oh, the bangs on those girl nofu there aren't wet! I could see you looking at us with those cute faces all the way to the end(LOL)!"
SHIORI: "It's like a speech from a morning meeting, isn't it? Everyone's so close I'm embarrassed to look you all in the eye! We started out playing clubs? Something like that? Nostalgia and brand new, everyone is so loud, to think that all of you were always cheering us so loudly. Don't catch a cold!"
MOMOKA: "Can you see us? To be honest, some of you can't see us, right? But even so, I believe that all of you can feel the air and the atmosphere of this place in your body and senses. This(GIG TAKAHASHI) was always written down on our schedule. We were looking forward to this. I hope the next time we play here, that all of you people in the back can be up front..."
KANAKO: "This is so much fun... I can hear your voices saying Kanako... Kanako... and it feels so close..."
At some point, before we knew it, the Master was on stage, and he gave his assessment. "As a fan, I was getting goosebumps the whole time, from start to finish!" SHIORI promptly checked her arms. "It looks like my goosebumps have already gone away..." And thanks to Master Takahashi's request - although no encore had been scheduled, they added one on the spot. They performed the song "Orange Note." "Sorry, that was my request," apologized Master Takahashi. C'mon, no need to apologize, we all wanted to hear "Orange Note" from up close like this too!
A big stadium is amazing, but a small club has its charms too. No matter where they play, Momoclo is Momoclo. I get the feeling that it was GIG TAKAHASHI that taught us such a sacred lesson - that these things are "natural and proper."
